Joseph T. Malak, MD FAAP
Dr. Malak is the founder of Bambini Pediatrics. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he attended Western Reserve College (graduating magna cum laude with honors in biology) and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
He then moved to Kansas City, and completed a residency in pediatrics at Childrens Mercy Hospital in 1984. From there, he went on to serve as chief resident in pediatrics at Albany Medical Center.
He then got his first "real job" -- working at HealthShield, a staff model HMO on Union Street in Poughkeepsie. The organization later merged with CHP, and in the late 90's, joined Kaiser.
As Kaiser Permanente closed its operation in the region in 1999, Dr. Malak established a local practice called TLC Pediatrics. Starting with about 3,000 patients, it grew over the next ten years to serve about 15,000 children.
From 1996 through 2002, he was chairman of the division of pediatrics at St. Francis. And from 2003 to 2008, he served as associate chairman of the department of pediatrics at Vassar Brothers. Over the years, he served on a number of committees at both hospitals. He helped establish the Center for Bloodless Care at Vassar, and remains on this committee.
Dr. Malak is a single parent with two adopted children. Some years ago, his son suffered a traumatic brain injury. He is thus empathic to other single parents, to those with internationally-adopted children, and to parents of children with special needs. He has been through hyperbaric oxygen treatments with his son.
In recent years, Dr. Malak has developed a growing interest in the field of integrative pediatrics. He is a charter member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Complementary, Holistic, and Integrative Medicine. He is also a member of the International Pediatric Integrative Medicine Network.
His interests currently include whole food nutrition (he is a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation), raw food nutrition (Dr. Gabriel Cousens, David Wolfe, and others), the Body Ecology Diet, and the biomedical treatment approach to autistic spectrum disorders.
He attended the Defeat Autism Now in April 2009 and completed the Level 1 clinician seminar. Presentations by Drs. Kenneth Bock, Andrew Wakefield, Andrew Levinson, Nancy O’Hara, and other accomplished speakers can be viewed at this link.
R. Mark Sprankle, Practice Manager
Mark has been with Bambini since it was little more than a mission statement. Coming from an extensive background in network administration, system operations management, and, more recently, electronic health records -- Mark is both practice manager and information technology wiz for the practice.
Having lived through the process of turning Bambini from a word document into a functioning medical practice, he knows first hand both the theoretical as well as practical aspects of establishing, then juggling, the many priorities involved in getting a medical practice airborne.
If you are a physician interested in establishing a new small group or solo practice, Mark will be available for consultant work beginning early 2010. Click here to view his full CV.
